South Africa - Kruger gold one pond 1896 From my own collection. Had this since I was 14 years old. (Which is quite a long time ago!) Obv: Bearded bust of President Johannes Paulus Kruger left, legend around. Lettering: ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK Translation: South African Republic Rev: Arms of the South African Republic below denomination and date. Note: wagon - single shaft. Lettering: 1 POND * 1896 * EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT Translation: Unity makes strength 1896 mintage 235 000 = 28% Johannes Paulus Kruger (1825-1904) was a prominent Boer leader against British rule and president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republic (1883-1902) which later became the Transvaal Colony under British rule and then the Transvaal Province of the Union of South Africa. In 1994 the Transvaal was split into four provinces: Northern (now Limpopo), Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging (now Gauteng) Eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga) and North West Province.
