A fine Apulian Red Figure Hydria by the Darius Underworld Circle. Compare with one sold for rather more at Christies. This piece is fairly unusually totally intact, not recomposed from fragments as is so often the case. Shows a youth nude but for a chlamys over his left arm in which he holds out a cista , (a sacred chest) and holds a thyrsus in the other. The female to the right, looking back, wears a chiton and holds a tambourine and a patera. Totally intact: some spots of lime accretion which can be removed. 365 mm high Circa 330 BC Ex Kyriacou collection, ex Parthenon Gallery and ex. English collection [1970s]
