Magnificent and large silver Celtic torc in very good metal. This is a large and very imposing piece of ancient silver jewellery.
It is made from three slender silver bars twisted carefully together to form this twisted spiral effect which is greatly enhanced by incorporating a spiral of three double entwined silver wires. The ends are formed into a hook and an eye both protected with a decorated silver sleave. A few small stress fractures as one would expect but they do not compromise its integrity. The photo shpws a closr up small section which is the worst of it. Some silver sulphide patina and some very typical silver chloride gone purple as it does in some ancient silver.
158mm across. Weighs 113.5g. Danubian Celtic, from Moesia. Difficult to date. Between 3rd/4th century BC and 1st century.
