This is an unusual piece in a particularly thin and delicate pottery fine grained orange fabric with an external dark grey slip; almost as delicate as Nabatean pottery. The top part is black, the bottom reserved. A simple but elegant use of colour I think. Totally intact. 78 mm Roman, circa 3rd century. Parallels: Robinson H. S. Pottery of the Roman period. The Athenian Agora Vol. V. Princeton, 1959, p.87, pl. 18, M36; Hayes J. W. The Villa Dionysos excavations, Knossos: the pottery // BSA # 78. London, 1983, p.109, fig. 11, 150. Ex Caton-Thompson collection. No, I don't know who they are! This information has accompanied this piece through the last two owners.
