You will soon see below why I have titled this page  "fake scarab book".

 

I came  upon this  interesting posting on the artifakes forum.

It is  about this book, of which  it would appear  very many copies have been sold on eBay.

It is by a fellow called William  Owen who acknowledges as a source Dr. W. R. Davies, M.D.

 

The seller somewhat breathlessly declares:

The scarab was the Ancient god Khepri', that all the other Ancient Egyptian gods worshiped, for the unique power revealed in this work, as there is no other book in the world on this subject.

How to read, catalogue and authenticate......  a superb guide, hundreds of illustrations. (???)

  • Not exactly. Nothing about how to read, catalogue and authenticate.
    In fact of the several hundred scarabs shown, amazingly, all but two are (bad) fakes!

This is the only definitive work on the Ancient Egyptian Scarabs. (??)

If you feel I am being unkind to the seller take into consideration   that someone (not me) took a lot of time and effort in several long emails with many photos and references to explain to the seller why she was completely wrong about this.

 

But she took no notice at all.

She said amongst other things.....

THE PHOTOS IN THE BOOK ARE OF REAL SCARABS, they are not FAKES, the book is endorsed by Dr. W.R. Davies, Egyptologist and Fellow of the British Museum. Maybe you have not had the pleasure of actually seeing REAL scarabs some people make hasty judgement's when they don't have all of the facts, maybe you are one of these people.

I don't know what souvenir stand you "collected" the scarabs from but you had better RE-CHECK. These are real, Dr. W.R. Davies was not only an Egyptologist but a personal friend of Howard Carter, I am sure you know who he was, or maybe the souvenir stand didn't have that information. Dr.W.R. Davies (I forgot to mention) was also a Member of British Parliament and was not likely to endorse fakes of any kind and that goes for people also.
Again thank you for your interest, maybe you can learn something. Actually every scarab had been examined by experts in the field of Egyptology, I don't know what souvenir stand you your collection came from but rest assured every scarab is REAL.

I have sold several copies, one to a Professor in San Fransisco that teaches Ancient History and another one to a English Professor from Yale University that had just returned from Egypt,
both were very satisfied. with the book and learned allot from the book
I am of course selling the book, I guess it is up to the buyer to do any research regarding the book or the author.

 Ok, let's do some research.

  • Yes, Dr Wyndham Roy Davies was a Member of Parliament.
  • Absolutely no references to him having been interested in archaeology though.
  • And "Fellow of The British Museum" ?

 

Well, it is true that for very long time the Brtish Museum has arranged various sponsored research fellowships.

So I enquired.

They have no record of this person.

And what about what  she wrote:

Howard Carter (9 May 1874 – 2 March 1939) the  famous British  archaeologist who discovered tomb of Tutankhamun.

 

  • When Carter died in 1939 W R Davies was 13 years old. Friends??

Well, not everyone shares the seller's enthusiasm for this "book".
