2nd Jan 2007 I put together a few links to websites that I have found very useful in my personal research on bronze artefacts.
Pdf File Technology and Provence of Metals"Study and papers on Metallurgy in Brooches and Artefacts"http://tinyurl.com/yjq7heJournal of the American Institute of Conservation."Examination of the patina and corrosion morphology of some roman bronzes".Bronze Disease; Understanding & Treatment. "From Brons website." Conservation of Cupreous Metals. "Chemistry of copper alloy corrosion and treatment."Pdf File: Bronze Disease: Understanding, Curing and Preventative TreatmentJ"ason Sanchez & Dr Ken Harl (American Numismatic Society)"
This table http://tinyurl.com/yjsvqb that I loaded up on a word file is from The Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art- Treatment Repair and Restoration By H.J.Plenderleith & A.E.A. Werner.
I found it very useful as a quick and precise guide on what treatment to use with copper alloys.
Bronzes need some special attention I carefully inspect them about once a month, and near my bronze items I keep 2 small glass trays with silicia gel that maintains a constant 60% humidity range at about 20°C. Museum environment ranges from 50% to 65% RH at temperatures 16° to 25°C.
68%RH at 25°C is the danger limit where the formation of moulds on organic material can begin and the moisture contained in the air can condense helping the formation of chlorides in bronze disease.
Artefacts sometimes need conservation (by means of cleaning, stabilizing, consolidating and restoring) , and preservation. Not necessarily and fortunately an artefact has to undergo all of these cares but 1 must always be considered; Preservation: The act of keeping or state of been kept from injury or decay.
